The fly agaric , also called Amanita muscaria, is a striking mushroom with a distinctive red cap and white spots. It is by far the most well-known mushroom on planet Earth and in recent years more and more people have started using the dried fly agaric for mind-altering purposes.

Appearance: The fly agaric has a shiny, convex cap that is initially red, but can fade over time (and dry!) The cap is covered with white or yellow warts that look like spots. The mushroom has a thin, white stem and a cone-shaped base at the bottom.

Occurrence: The fly agaric is widespread in various parts of the world and is often found in deciduous and coniferous forests, especially in connection with birch or pine tree roots. We at Flowers & Shrooms collect some of the fly agarics ourselves and buy some of them. In Germany, there are strict laws in this regard! Please take note when picking!

Poisonous? The dried fly agaric contains a lot of muscimol due to the decarboxylation of ibotenic acid, which is responsible for the psychoactive effect and minimizes the toxicity to such an extent that it is theoretically only possible to experience poisoning if you consume 17,000g of fresh mushrooms. No cases of acute poisoning are known!
